How does the brain process information?
(extract from book)

General Brain Diagram

To explain the working hypothesis of the unfiltered brain and what autistic traits stem from this concept, first, it is necessary to understand how the brain works in terms of processing sensory and emotional information, then presenting the conscious part of the self with data to make decisions.

  • Processing of sensory information:

    • Sensory Lobes: Parietal, Temporal and Occipital

  • Processing of emotional information:

    • Limbic System

  • Higher-order cognitive decision making:

    • Frontal Lobe (prefrontal cortex)

The Unfiltered Brain Hypothesis
(extract from book)

The hypothesis of the unfiltered brain suggests that sensory and emotional information, typically filtered and presented in a limited concise manner for neurotypical individuals, is more expansive and unfiltered in neurodivergent individuals.

During developmental stages, particularly in formative years, social and language predictive models evolve, driven by the reward centre. However, disruptions in this development, such as sensory overload and a difference in processing information, may lead autistic individuals to prioritise more intense and focused interests over typical social predictive models.

While heightened sensitivity to unfiltered sensory and emotional stimuli can provide several potential advantages, including enhanced attention to detail, unique perspectives, increased empathetic awareness, improved memory abilities, and the development of specialised interests, skills, and talents.

iIt may also entail perceived disadvantages. These can include reduced cognitive responsiveness, challenges in emotional regulation, distorted perception and judgement, avoidance behaviour, and difficulties in decision-making.

Unmasking

Unmasking (extract from book)

Unmasking involves peeling back the layers of societal expectations, learned behaviours, and coping mechanisms to reveal the essence of who you are beneath the surface. In this process of self-discovery, establishing a clear framework, clarifying values, and identifying areas for exploration are essential steps that can guide and support your journey. Let's summarise each step, then add detail for each section then finally we can combine to give real-world examples of what unmasking might look like. 1

Clarify Your Values

As you embark on the journey of unmasking, it's crucial to clarify your values and beliefs that will serve as the foundation for your self-discovery. Reflect on what matters most to you, what principles you want to uphold, and what standards you want to measure yourself against. Your values will act as a compass, guiding your decisions and actions as you navigate the complexities of unmasking.

2

Identify Areas for Exploration

Unmasking is a deeply personal and multifaceted process that can encompass various aspects of your life. Take the time to identify specific areas or domains that you want to focus on during your journey. This could include social interactions, sensory experiences, communication skills, emotional expression, special interests, or self-care practices. By pinpointing areas for exploration, you can direct your efforts toward areas of greatest significance and relevance to your personal growth and well-being.

3

Define Your Unmasking Framework

Before delving into the process of unmasking, it's essential to establish a clear framework that will guide your journey. This framework should outline your objectives, methods, and desired outcomes. Consider factors such as your motivation for unmasking, your readiness to embrace authenticity, and your willingness to confront challenges along the way. Having a well-defined framework will provide structure and direction as you navigate the unmasking process.

Example

Chani's Story

  • Value: Authenticity - to be true self.

  • Area for Exploration: Mimicking Social Cues and Behaviours, Concealing Special Interests

  • Framework: Set boundaries, seek support

pencil drawing of Chani

Let's consider the example of Chani, a young woman who was diagnosed as autistic in her early twenties. Throughout her life, Chani struggled with social interactions and found herself mimicking neurotypical behaviours to fit in. She would force herself to make small talk, maintain eye contact, and suppress her natural tendencies in social settings, which left her feeling exhausted and disconnected from her true self.

After her diagnosis, Chani embarked on a journey of unmasking and self-discovery. With the support of a few close friends who understood and accepted her for who she was, Chani began to let go of the need to mimic social skills and started embracing her authentic self. Instead of forcing herself to engage in superficial conversations, Chani learned to communicate more openly and honestly, sharing her genuine thoughts and feelings with others. She no longer felt the need to hide her passions and interests, such as her love for science fiction and her talent for writing fan-fiction.

Chani's friends played a crucial role in her unmasking process by providing encouragement, validation, and companionship. They accepted her quirks and idiosyncrasies, creating a safe space where she could be herself without fear of judgement. As Chani continued to unmask and embrace her authenticity, she noticed a positive shift in her social interactions and relationships. She formed deeper connections with others who appreciated her for who she was, rather than who she thought she should be.

By seeking support from understanding friends and allowing herself to be vulnerable, Chani successfully transitioned from masking her social skills to living more authentically, leading to greater self-acceptance, fulfilment, and genuine connections with others.

Further unmasking stories are available within the book.

Tez Frost

A late diagnosed autistic aerospace engineer residing in Bath, UK. Married to my wife with two teenage children.

I've long felt a sense of difference—not in the sense of uniqueness, but rather in feeling unlike my peers. I wrote this book to understand deeper what it meant to be autistic. In discovering myself I hope others can find themselves too.

Why did I write this book?

My journey into the world of autism advocacy and understanding began with personal experiences that ignited a fervent desire to explore and share the diverse perspectives surrounding this complex and often misunderstood condition. As someone with a deep connection to autism, both through my own experiences and those of my loved ones, I felt compelled to embark on a mission to shed light on the multifaceted nature of autism and pave the way for greater acceptance and inclusivity.

This book is not just a collection of words on paper; it is a manifestation of my unwavering commitment to amplify the voices of neurodivergent individuals and challenge societal perceptions of autism. Through a blend of scientific research, personal anecdotes, and insights from the autism community, I aim to provide a comprehensive and empathetic exploration of autism.

I hope to inspire compassion, foster understanding, and spark meaningful dialogue about autism and neurodivergence. Together, let us embark on a journey of discovery, acceptance, and celebration of the beautiful diversity that makes us uniquely human.
